Mountain Dew is Evil
Mountain Dew is Evil
Jan 17For as long as I can remember Mountain Dew and generally pop in general has been something I consume on a regular basis. Since moving out of my parent’s house and being 100% responsible for the food and beverages that come into the house it has only gotten worse.
I’ve always said if I could ditch the pop I’d instantly begin to lose weight. There is no doubt about it. Let’s get to some very disturbing numbers here. I purchase it in 6 packs of 24 ounce bottles. One bottle has 340 calories.
I probably drink 3 on an average day, 2 on an off day and 4 on days when I’m up longer. That over 1,000 calories a day in pretty much pure sugar. *jaw drop*
So, baby steps is the way I’m going right now. I’m not sure whether it’s the caffeine or the sugar (HFCS technically), but I’m going to limit myself to 2/day for a week and in the gaps it will be water and powerade. In an ideal situation I’d just quit cold turkey but life isn’t ideal.
Powerade only has 130 calories per bottle and at least has some B vitamins in it. After a week I’ll revisit the issue and hopefully report back with progress here. I intend to then go down to 1 bottle/day and probably eventually wean down to 1 can a day and keep it there as my daily “fix”.
Wish me luck!

Good luck on cutting back! I have never dealt with a soda addiction (I am a very odd individual that has never liked any soda), but I’ve heard from so many people how hard it can be to cut back, or give it up entirely.
I think substituting some of your Mountain Dew intake with Powerade, or even Gatorade or some of the flavored waters, is an excellent idea. Your body still gets the taste and some of the sugar it’s craving, but without nearly as many calories!
P.S. It’s for the calorie reason that I cut milk completely out of my diet (except for with cereal or shakes) about six years ago. I just couldn’t stand the idea of *drinking* calories.
Good Luck!
I’ve also been cutting back on the amount of pop I drink, but today just one of those days I craved and purchased a pop without even thinking I should grab a water or juice instead.
Also congrats on baby #2
Powerade is full of HFCS and it’s SO BAD for you. Do you like tea? Homemade tea would be great or something like Crystal Light Pure which is cheap to make in big batches.
God luck! When I gave up Diet Pepsi it was HARD but now I REALLY enjoy my my “treat” which is having one when we go to the movies.
I wish I could tolerate artificial sweeteners but I cannot stand the taste of any of them (Splenda, Aspartame, Sucralose, etc) so anything low or no calorie is pretty much out of the picture.
Good luck! I think that’s a great idea! I know you can do it.
I bet you can find something else you like to drink that is much healthier.
I think you have a great plan for cutting back on the soda. You can do it!
Best of luck! I’ve never had an actual need to consume soda, but if there’s Dr. Pepper in the house I’ll drink it. I actually prefer water, I don’t feel like soda ever actually truly quenches my thirst. My friend has been giving up diet soda and she bought these little zero calorie water flavor things called Mio, they don’t have that icky artificial sweetener taste and they come in these super easy to use/carry around mini squeeze bottles. Might be a way to help you up your water intake.
Getting off soda is really hard, but you can do it! I swear! If you have some set backs, don’t get on yourself too hard abotu it, just resolve to do better next time. When I guilt myself too much (thinking it will motivate me) it ends with me not thinkign about it and giving up. You can do it!
